Our residential design experience

Sustainability is the bedrock of our design, construction, and development process. Using low-energy and passive design principles we develop environmentally responsible housing.

Rob’s crafted focus lies in the design of high-quality contemporary housing enriching the everyday life of the occupants.

Our residential architecture experience ranges from the design of contemporary house extensions, conversion of redundant buildings to houses, new single dwellings, to multi-house farmyard redevelopments.

In architectural practice, Rob focuses on the following projects:

Low -energy healthy new build housing

Overview

Light touch development of land providing low operational and embodied carbon homes. Crafted to the highest architectural standards. Innovation and incorporation of modern methods of construction.

Sustainable opportunities

New build construction offers the most comprehensive opportunities for a low-energy home through being able to fully develop the design tailored to the key principles of energy conservation and low-impact material choices.

Project Spotlight

New House Farm

Low-energy Passive House – South Cambridgeshire

Agricultural form and materials, contemporary timeless aesthetics, modern living.

Conceived as a low-energy contemporary barn-style home, New House Farm, fuses the traditions of agricultural form and contemporary timeless aesthetics. Effortlessly blending into the landscape forming the backdrop to modern life. Tailored Architecture has deployed the principles of Passive House and low-carbon technologies establishing a home for an environmental future.

Rob’s new build experience

Rob has extensive experience in designing and planning new-build family homes, to all contemporary policy requirements as informed by Local Authority Planning Policy, on sensitive and complex sites. He has extensive experience in the technical design of housing projects. During previous architectural practice, he has successfully gained planning consents in the following architectural contexts:

  • Infill and back-land developments in urban and village settings
  • Plot subdivision and side garden developments
  • Replacement dwellings in urban, village, and open countryside settings
  • Multi-house redevelopments of redundant farmyards

Deep retrofit of existing houses

COMING SOON

Overview

Deep retrofit of existing homes to the highest energy standards and architectural design. Creating healthy environments to live in.

Sustainable opportunities

Our existing houses constitute the largest opportunity for energy reduction as our homes are one of the greatest users of energy.

Deep retrofit is the most efficient way of reducing our dependency on fossil fuels. As of 2022, just over 40% of the UK’s electricity is generated from fossil fuel sources*. To fully release ourselves from depending on fossil fuels we need to carefully upgrade our homes to reduce consumption. Switching to renewably produced electricity without significant consumption reduction is not sustainable.

Our homes will need a combination of building fabric upgrades and low-carbon heating systems. These will need to be considered carefully and balanced to vastly increase the thermal performance of a house, and thus heavily reduce the operational carbon in the future, while using low-impacting materials to alleviate the upfront embodied carbon emissions which are baked into any project during the construction phase.

Rob’s deep retrofit experience

Rob has a deep knowledge of the requirements to reduce a home’s energy usage through the hierarchy of energy conservation. He is currently developing strategies for affordable deep retrofit of existing houses, keeping the whole life carbon cycle at the heart of any works.

He also has experience in the design of thoughtful contemporary reconfigurations and extensions to existing dwellings which unlock the potential of the available space. Re-planning to improve the flow creating healthy and enjoyable homes to live in.

Repurposing of redundant infrastructure for housing

Overview

Low-energy conversions of redundant infrastructure. Including farmyards, pump houses, and telephone exchanges to name a few ….

Sustainable opportunities

The most sustainable building is the one that already exists.

Redevelopment through demolition and replacement of existing buildings is not a sustainable solution due to the high wastage of embodied carbon. A conversion approach is the best way to maximise housing while retaining the already expended embodied carbon within an existing building.

Redundant infrastructure is a prime example of architectural conversions which produce high-quality low-energy housing with careful design and thought. Creating healthy and exciting places to live.

Rob’s repurposing redundant infrastructure experience

Rob has experience of designing and obtaining planning permission for the conversion of existing infrastructure buildings to residential dwellings. These have been single-homes and multi-house developments.

  • Agricultural buildings to residential under permitted development – Class Q conversions. Including; redundant farmyards, dutch barns, potato stores, grain stores, timber framed barns, cow sheds, piggeries, nissan huts, and steel and concrete framed agricultural sheds.
  • Conversion of redundant farming buildings to residential in open countryside under Local Authority Planning policy.
  • Conversion of listed and curtilage-listed agricultural barns to residential.
  • Office buildings to residential under permitted development – Class O conversions. Including town centre above shop conversions to apartments.
  • Utility infrastructure to residential dwellings. Including, water treatment station, and inland drainage water pumping stations.
